About Us

Who are we?

The Spine Society of Australia (SSA) was founded on 13th July 1990 and facilitates the exchange of ideas, research and communication about spine health. Whilst the majority of members are orthopaedic surgeons or neurosurgeons, the SSA is inclusive of all health professionals who are concerned with the care of the spine.

The ASR collects information about the results of spine surgery. It includes surgeons who work in both public and private hospitals around Australia.

What is the purpose of this research?

The Australian Spine Registry will tell us:

  • How often different types of spine surgery are performed;
  • The benefit and safety of different operations;
  • Whether age or other illnesses affect the results of the surgery;
  • And how Australian spine surgery compares internationally.

The ultimate goal of the registry is to capture information about spine surgery with particular focus on the benefits that the patients receive from their surgery.
